Arcoíris Cultural

The name of this project is inspired by the rainbow of many diverse cultures within our community. This project was created out of the necessity for a cultural center that celebrates and supports our undeserved Latina/o/x and indigenous Mesoamerican populations in Lincoln County. Championed by a bilingual, bicultural staff, Arcoíris Cultural serves as a conduit for community building, sharing traditional arts and culture, and providing culturally specific social support services.

Arcoíris Cultural strives to foster whole-person wellness through a hybrid of resource navigation, arts, culture, and community building. This is accomplished through a variety of cultural programming, including music and dance performances, art exhibits and art classes, traditional cooking classes, artisan markets, and much more. Additionally, the staff is available to assist with health care system navigation, Oregon Health Plan (OHP) applications, and language accessibility and development.

Corvallis Daytime Drop-in Center

Corvallis Daytime Drop-in Center (CDDC) is a place “where needs are met.” We operate the only local, daytime community resource and navigation center for people who are experiencing homelessness. Our location and work take place in Benton County, though we serve folks from Linn and Lincoln counties as well. We are a crucial resource hub for information, referral, and direct services for individuals experiencing poverty. CDDC meets people’s basic needs, provides dignified advocacy, offers opportunities for building community and social networks, and supports individuals’ welfare across emergency, transitional, and ongoing circumstances. CDDC provides services across the following needs: mental and behavioral health support; physical health support; housing security; food security; employment support; and social support.

LBHEA's partnership will enable us to better help the folks we serve navigate basic needs, increase access to wellness, improve health equity, and decrease health disparities. Grant monies will help fund expansion of CDDC’s support around daily food provision; identity document replacement; affordable housing initial intake; applying for benefits; transportation to loved ones and support networks; screening by medical professionals; access to medical evaluation and referral for treatment; pet advocacy support; and prescription co-pays.

Corvallis Environmental Center

The Corvallis Environmental Center (CEC) is a community-based, educational non-profit that has prioritized partnerships to implement programs to address community needs since 1994. CEC's mission is to create a healthy, sustainable community. We do this through pre-K through 8th environmental education, Farm to School programs, youth leadership development, teacher training, and food security. We are based in Corvallis, Oregon and work in Benton and Linn counties. CEC’s programs include after school programs, summer camps, a nature-based preschool in Avery Park, classroom education in partnership with the Corvallis, Philomath, and Albany School Districts, family programs and events, and a 1-acre demonstration and education garden in Starker Arts Park known as SAGE. The food grown at SAGE is donated to those in need through our social service partner agencies.

Funds from LBHEA will allow CEC to support our equity goals by reviewing pre-K through elementary curriculum with an equity lens to identify improvements in the learning opportunities for kids in our programs. The project will include staff training, new and existing community connections, refining our equity lens for the purpose of curriculum review, and examining our lessons and activities utilizing that tool. This work will be foundational for further curriculum and program development serving thousands of children in Benton and Linn counties in the coming years.

The Corvallis School District Family Support Program

The Corvallis School District Family Support Program helps families meet their basic needs and identify goals to increase stability. We focus on relationships first, and finding creative ways to reduce barriers to education for students experiencing poverty or homelessness. Our team connects families with community and district resources to address needs related to housing, food, clothing, employment, state assistance, health care, after school care, and more.

In a typical school year, we have over 300 Corvallis School District students identified as homeless. About one-third of CSD students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Since the start of the pandemic, the level of need has risen steadily. Many families are having basic needs unmet for the first time. Our team has responded by increasing services and capacity.

Our Family Support Team includes family advocates and liaisons fluent in Spanish and Arabic, as well as Benton County Health Navigators co-located in our schools. This increases our ability to reach a broad range of students and families. We believe students learn best when their basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing, are met.

The Disability Equity Center

The Disability Equity Center (DEC) is a community hub made by and for disabled people. We are an organization built on disability culture, pride, and a fierce determination to make the world equitable for everyone. The DEC brings disabled voices to the center and offers a safe space for coalition, community building, and social connection. The DEC serves as a resource center for disabled folks and their allies, and it enables specific, concrete connections between people across the Mid-Willamette Valley disability community. The DEC believes that disability is powerful and beautiful!

We are excited to work in collaboration with the Linn Benton Health Equity Alliance and other community partners to overcome health inequities and empower folks with disabilities to lead holistically healthy and happy lives. Through generous LBHEA funds, we are excited to offer peer health and wellness education within our community, and support increased access and understanding about disability justice and inclusion practices for healthcare providers.

Growing Ancestral Roots

Growing Ancestral Roots (GAR), is an organization created to provide a soulful sacred space for people of various multicultural backgrounds from around the world and Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) navigating their identity(ies). This is a safe space to be in commune with our ancestors, to practice or reclaim our traditions, and to learn to plant in hopes to pass on that seed to future generations. GAR provides resources, healing, community building, cultural connection (both people and nutritional needs for the body), sharing, resilience and mentorship to support each other’s livelihood on the land and their future as the next generation of Black, Indigenous, and people of color farmers passionate about flourishing diverse world cultures.

This garden space is not just a garden space. GAR extends further in building friendships and bonds with each other and the community, sharing resources, anything from half a loaf of homemade sourdoughbread and weekly supportive meals to a car for a weekend getaway.

The Linn benton naacp branch #1118

Our organization’s mission has been clear since our founding in 1909: we work to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination. Since our local Branch's founding in 1971, we have strived for justice and inclusive excellence by providing opportunities for members to get involved in one of our many standing committees and initiatives that directly combat all forms of racial injustices and white supremacist ideologies. Serving both Linn and Benton Counties allows us to have a broad impact on our local community.

Old mill center

Old Mill Center was founded in 1977 as a preschool that integrated children with additional needs with those who were developing normally. This early focus of inclusion lives on today when we have six distinct but integrated programs that cover early development and learning, home visiting and parenting support, mental health services for children and their families and occupational therapy for children and serve Benton and Linn Counties. Our vision is for a community that works collaboratively to ensure that all children and families have access to services that improve their wellbeing.

Old Mill Center embarked on an intentional journey towards our vision for equity 7 years ago. We hope to advance two goals with the support from LBHEA: a) Engagement and support for BIPOC parents and families to be involved, become leaders and advocate for themselves in health equity concerns and situations and b) Support of BIPOC staff well-being, and sense of belonging, both in our organization and across other agencies where management is currently not BIPOC led and where BIPOC staff do not represent a majority of overall staff.

OSU Extension Linn County

In an effort to acknowledge and reinforce the value of Latino families’ input/reciprocal learning at community forums, and how mothers as cultural food preparers contribute to their family’s health, Linn Extension wants to give back to Latino families through a family empowerment activity “Como Agua Para Chocolate”. We would like to engage and educate families on how to document their traditional family recipes. Each participating family will create a family recipe book with personal anecdotes that they can continue to add to and expand. Food products utilized in recipes will be categorized and provided to Linn-Benton Food Share to advise emergency food pantries, and also inform ingredients in bilingual recipes provided through OSU Extension’s social marketing campaign “Food Hero/Héroe de Alimentos” www.foodhero.org/es.

We will also host community forums to discuss 2022 Latino family food security assessment findings, prioritize issues with community members, and explore solutions using the framework participatory action research (PAR). PAR is an approach to action research emphasizing participation and action by members of communities affected by that research. (6 community forums (3/county) targeting Latino families living in either Benton or Linn counties (50 people). Building leadership skills, self-efficacy, and confidence of existing and emerging Latino community leaders to play a larger role in representing the needs, experiences, and strengths of Latino families is critical to ensuring health equity for all of our region’s residents.
